Why the name "Free After 5" ?
Although I'm not a "Band" as far as being a group and going out travelling and doing gigs, I am fairly certain that at some point in time I will take on a partner or two and record as a group and not just as an individual. At the present I consider myself a studio musician and I'm concerned primarily with documenting my songs as well as performing the actual multi-track recordings for everyone to listen to. When I distinguish between "documenting" and "recording", I refer to the great amount of hours involved in typing up lyrics, arranging cover art, writing the sheet notation for various parts, copyright submissions, website updates - these are all administrative functions that consume a great deal of a musician's time and energy that are a very separate job from performing the multi-track recordings that are the "finished product" that we hope to hear.
When one musician has to perform all of these jobs, from administration to sound engineer and recording artist, it's a very time-consuming process. This is why it takes a long time to reach completion on a particular song project. Now, about the question of this "band name" -- well, even as a single musician working on all of these tasks, there are times that it is more convenient and efficient to have a band name to refer to. And because I hope in the future to have other musicians working with me, I wanted a group name and not just my own name. The name "Free After 5" came to me as I thought about the need a lot of us musicians have to hold down a day-job to pay the bills, and then after work - After 5 - we can begin the process of getting back into the project where we left off. So, it's a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that we're slaves to the day-job, but we're "Free After 5" to pursue our dreams!
